A long distance trip 4: BUDDHA IS NOT BUDDHA

There is Art stone’s village in the Đà Nẵng city. It was build around 1000 years ago. Here there are many fine art stone’s shops. Every passing customer is invited to buy things. Here it is Buddha’s village so there are many Buddha’s statues which is sold everywhere, even on each street. It so much to name’s street makes by stone.  The people live they by making sculptures, selling statues and stone handicrafts. Sometime, the trucks come to the cargo. The scene looks busy and noise. I think that this time will pass, life and death are impermanent so this time I want to come there after a long time. When my car have arrived the woman called and showed me a parking. She wanted us to buy stone crafts in her shop. I agreed and got buying tickets to do sightseeing.

Art stone’s village in the Đà Nẵng city

It is a mountain range with many caves and temples  I was walking up the stairs, and was recalling the old memories when here I often went with my mother. The stone steps are there and my mother is gone. My mother followed Buddhism so she usually got me to pagodas when I was very young. At the time I didn’t understand what is Buddhism, what is right view, what does follower according orbit Dharma. Here the monk taught us to bow to Buddha’s statues. Then I and my mother often prayed and asked for everything but they didn’t with us. That’s because I didn’t believe in Buddha. Now I feel shame about this memory!

I was walking up the stairs, and was recalling the old memories

I realize that Buddha’s statues made of copper, cement or plaster, how can they help you? They can’t know, can’t understand, can’t hear you, how can they fulfill your wishes? No, never! Why there are many Buddha’s statues in temples? Now I’ll explain it to you in order.

1/ The Buddha’s statue reminds you to the right path to Enlightenment, no another way

2/ The Buddha’s statue reminds you of your wish to attain Liberation

3/ The Buddha’s statue reminds you about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata (emptiness)

4/ The Buddha’s statue is object of visualization meditation to start going to Sunyata

In short, Buddha’s statue is not human, deva (God)  who can’t help you in everything, by everything, let alone it. Buddha’s statue is not Buddha, it is expediency to attain ultimate purpose, you won’t be confused copper with gold.

Buddha’s statue is not human, deva (God)  who can’t help you in everything, by everything,

After visiting tourist attraction we have inquired about Master Huệ Nghĩa’s health and offered him. It was quite dark when I got hotel.  A nice day will be to me tomorrow, I hope so!

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May the pure fragrance of Thanh Tri Yoga pervade every direction

May Covid 19 pandemic will be end soon.

Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Holy Guru,

I bow my head before your lotus feet!!! Thank you for sharing another wonderful English article entitled: “Chronicle distance 4: Buddha is not Buddha.” It is so nice that you are having a fantastic trip. It is my hope that you get to truly enjoy yourself while afar! In this article you prompt us that statues of Buddha are not meant to be worshiped and that they are not actually Buddha themselves. These statues are a representation and a reminder to us as you explain above:

    (1) The Buddha’s statue reminds you of the right path to enlightenment

    (2) The Buddha’s statue reminds you of your wish to attain liberation

    (3) The Buddha’s statue reminds you about the noble qualities of renunciation, bodhicitta, and sunyata

    (4) The Buddha’s statue is an object of visualization meditation to start going to sunyata

to understand this is to not get confused and mistake copper for gold. Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh, may you have a blessed and peaceful day!

May our Guru and his consort live a long and healthy life for the sake of all sentient beings

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature

May the global pandemic caused by the Corona virus soon end

    Dear holy Guru,

When I am writing these lines of comment, the clock hour has just hit 12 o’clock. After seeing Guru’s new article be posted at 11:30 pm, I am so happy that I read it all in one sitting. Every word in this meaningful article shows the Guru’s dedication to liberate all sentient beings from suffering and his comapssion is beyond the limitation of space and time.

Reading this article at the time when everyone is sleeping, I seem to see the image of the Guru sitting in the table to write an English article to teach many valuable lessons with the wish that we are free from wrong view and ignorance. He may spend hours writing these amazing articles. We are so ungrateful and heartless if we do not spend few minutes reading it and leaving a comment. Thinking about all difficulties in learning English Guru has carried for us to provide us with so amazing article with many vivid words and colorful expression; I feel that only reading and comment are not enough to repay his kindness.

His sincere and heartfelt words from the pure mind are touching our hearts and souls “the stone steps are there and my mother is gone” and the image of Guru’s mother who usually got her son to pagodas with wrong view resulting in getting in vain has imprinted in my mind. In this vast world of Saha, how many people like Guru’s mother who walk the wrong path are there? So many and It is uncountable I believe. If Guru had not spent all his life inventing the six marvelous spiritual methods and he did not stay up late every night even at the age of 60, how can all beings be free from wrong view and lean on the bright light of right view from Guru’s compassion and wisdom? In addition, I realize that Guru always thinks about his mother and he is wonderfully dutiful. His spiritual achievement at present is the best and effective way to help his mother.

Guru’s article has also proved that Boddichita and transcendent wisdom are beyond all worldly limitation of language and words. While many learners who are good at English even native speakers cannot write a single article in English, Guru continuously “publish” many articles for the enlightenment of all beings. It is also shown that with the pure devotion towards Guru, practitioners are absolutely able to get the pure bliss thanks to Guru’s blessings.

Thank you so much for your precious lesson of 4 main points about the right attitude towards Buddha’s statue to practice dharma diligently and Guru’s devotion to get enlightenment.

May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May covid 19 pandemic be soon over.

    Dear Guru,

Thank you for this article. I understand that a statue of the Buddha is used for visualization and to remind us to practice dharma. But the statue is not Buddha because the statue cannot hear your prayers. I understand a person shouldn’t worship a statue. I pray for your continued safety during your travels.

May Guru and his consort live a long and happy life

    Dear Holy Guru!

I am excited to read your article. The Buddha ‘s statue can not help your wish come true. As you see, so many Buddha’s statue place on the shop’scrap, and the owner of those shop have to waiting and praying to sell its. Why?, because of those make by  “stone, ciment, copper as so on” but there are no way to show how to have right view, right way. Seeing Buddha’s statue, praying in front of this is not the way to make you feel happier, if you do not being teached by the Guru. Who is passing all the status, and lead you to enlightenment.

I am so admire to have time on this trip. More and more day pass, so many excited I got. How enginer you had, so many encouges you can do. Thank for all my Guru had done.

Thank you so much!, I pray the Guru and his consort long live for the sake of humans beings.

    Dear Holy Guru,

I’m delighted to follow your journey and visit Danang city through this article.

In this amazing article, I have seen beautiful scene through your pictures and skillful writing as well as know about Art stone’s village which I had never known before . According to this article, I have learnt a beneficial lesson about Buddha statue. The Buddha statue is an expediency, a reminder of right path to the Enlightenment, a reminder of the wish to attain Liberation and noble qualities, it is also an object of visualization meditation. So Buddha statue is not Buddha, not god and not even human. Despite how much and how long you pray, it can’t hear, can’t help us anything, can’t fulfill any wishes. I feel so sorry for beings who thought copper as gold and have spend lot of time, energy to go to temples to pray and meditation. They thought only temples with lot of Buddha statues would help them. Every Buddhist event, thousands thousands of people push, against each other in temples in order to worship and pray in front of Buddha statue and believe that way will help them earn merit and gain their wish. I wonder if anyone who are not monk would have time to go to pray in front of Buddha everyday or only once time for a while is enough. Hence, I am grateful for the precious opportunity to meet Guru, follow Guru step and visit chanhtuduy.com, the Vimalakirti Castle with thousands of right view lessons. I can earn merit, wisdom and right view easily by reading and commenting in this beneficial castle everyday from anywhere without boundaries. I happily praise Guru’s Bodhicitta, generosity and wisdom.

I pray for your Dharma trip to be successful. I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your consort for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Covid-19 pandemic will eliminate soon.

May all sentient beings attain the Buddha’s nature happiness.

Also good to see Guru trying to find out health of another Buddisht Master. He may stay healthy.

  10. Mật Nhất Nguyên says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

I’m grateful for the article. It was published late at night, the Guru thought about us even after a long trip. Through reading and commenting on chanhtuduy.com, I remind myself to be in the Dharma orbit.

When reading the article, the image of the Buddha comes to my mind. I’m too lucky. Many people see the appearance of the Buddha statues hundreds of times but have little to no knowledge about what they actually represent — (1) Enlightenment, (2) Liberation, (3) Renunciation, Bodhicitta, Sunyata, and (4) Visualization meditation to approach Sunyata.

Only when I start learning from the Guru, I start to see beyond just appearance and think about the real meaning when seeing a Buddha statue. Through the Guru, I see the wise and compassionate Buddha, not just another figure made out of copper. In that sense, to me, the Guru represents the Buddha.

Now, when I think about the Guru, I think about the gate to Liberation, similar to the 2nd verse in Master Ashvagosha’s “50 verses of Guru devotion.” Thank you for guiding me. May the Guru and His Consort have good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature. May the Corona pandemic will soon be over.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  11. Mật Ánh Dương says:

    Dear Guru!
I am delighted to follow you back to Da Nang city, a bustling coastal city that I have been to many times but now, it looks different when wearing a rare tranquil appearance. The feeling of a little sadness when looking back on old memories makes me deeply experience the lesson about the impermanence of life that you have mentioned in this article. It is the fact that every moment we spend in life could also be the last time we experience something.
I found it very interesting to follow Guru to visit the Art stone village, an ancient culture of this land. The mossy and old cement stairs not only take you to the top of the mountain but also bring you back to childhood memories with your mother. “The stone steps are there and my mother is gone” is just a short narrative sentence but it brings emotions that cannot be depicted in my heart. The impermanence of human life brings unpleasant feelings of separation. But we cannot live forever in those negative emotions, we must put them aside to continue on the path which brings the ultimate liberation for ourselves and others.

You said that you felt ashamed of yourself for not believing in Buddha when you were young, but I feel that it would be extremely shameful for myself if I don’t have sincere faith and genuine devotion towards the Guru, Buddha and Dharma. That’s because I am a hundred thousand times more fortunate than you when I now have a wise and compassionate Guru who helps me understand what Buddhism is, what right view is, and how the orbit of Dharma is. I thank Guru for bestowing us the method of “taking the results as the path” so that we can avoid many failures that Guru has experienced.
Especially, in this article, you taught us valuable lesson about the real meaning of the Buddha statue. Accordingly, the Buddha statue is only a means to remind us of the purpose of ultimate liberation, it cannot fulfill our wishes so “Buddha’s statue is not Buddha”, it’s unnecessary and meaningless when a temple is decorated with too many Buddha statues. Therefore, what we need to do to benefit ourselves and others is not to pray at temples with many Buddha statues, but we must try to change ourselves according to the orbit of Dharma, to please the Guru by true devotion, then the Buddha will be present right around us, even though I couldn’t see Him as if I am standing in front of a Buddha statue, He would still hear and bless my prayers.
Thank you, Guru, for giving this meaningful Dharma sermon to us. I feel so grateful for Guru’s continuous efforts. This article is indeed great about grammar, vocabulary, expressions and academic content. I am looking forward to reading your next English articles.
May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May Guru’s Dharma trip to be safe and successful from the beginning to the end.
May covid 19 pandemic soon end.

    Dear Guru,

I am delighted to read this article.

I am thankful to you for sharing a meaningful article with many beautiful photos in Danang city. I am admired and grateful to Guru’s bodhicitta, you alway teachs us to change our mind from wrong view to right view by Dharma, even Guru spend hours writting these at late night by English in the elderly age. Through this article, I have a valuable lesson about why the Buddha’s statues – made of copper, cement or plaster can not help us because they can not know, can not understand and can not hear for fulfilling our wishes. Hence, they can not teach, can not show the right way, can not guide us the right method. They only can help remind us about the right path to Enlightenment, attain Liberation, remember about noble qualities as bodhicitta and sunyata, the objects of visualization meditation to start going to Sunyata. I will learn by heart the Guru teaching “Buddha’s statue is not Buddha, it is expediency to attain ultimate purpose, you won’t be confused copper with gold”. Only the Guru, who, like the teaching of Avagoshava saints in “Fifty verses of Guru devotion” lives on this modern life, help us know the right view, show us the right way to the path of the Enlightenment, guide us the right method to go to the Liberation City through practicing and applying Pure Mind Yoya with Guru’s acceptance. Fortunately, I could meet Guru in this life and follow Guru on the greatest journey, with the devotion towards Guru. I am grateful to Guru and am eager for reading more of your writings in English.

May Guru and your consort live long and have good health for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Dhrama’s trip of Guru always be safe and successful without any trouble from beings and non-beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May the Covid 19 pandemic will be end soon.

  14. Mật Từ says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

I have read this article. After reading, I understand the purposes of having Buddha statues are: 1) to remind us to the right path of Enlightenment, no other way 2) to remind us of our wish to attain Liberation 3) remind us about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata 4) The Buddha’s statue is object of visualization meditation to start going to Sunyata. Overall, statues are made of raw elements so they cannot fulfil any wishes. It proves the reality that many pagodas, temples has been going against this while spreading rumor that their statues are “sacred” than others. Thanks to Guru’s teachings, we are not dependable upon external factors like statues but concentrate on mind transformation to the right Dharma orbit. Furthermore, we have more realistic object to remind us during our path. That is Guru’s example and Guru’s teachings that go to every small corner of our mind. Like Padmasambhava taught in “Fifty verses of Guru devotion” that:” Therefore, a disciple who wants to acquire good qualities of compassion, generosity, moral self-control and patience should consider Guru as Buddha Vajradhara”. I will keep contemplating on Guru’ examples and Guru’s teachings as statue in my mind.

I sincerely pray for Guru’s health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.

    May Covid19 pandemic end soon.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  15. Dr C H Lakshminarayan says:

I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guru.

During the next part of Guru’s Dharma trip,to the ancient Art village in the Da Nang City  which was built 1000 years ago,it is a feast for eyes to see  and witness a treasure of beautiful  Buddha statues of various types made of plaster, cement, copper ,or stones carved and shaped by skilled artists !

People of that village mostly live by this profession only.!

Since it is a mountain range, with many caves and temples , while walking up the hill Guru’s memory goes back to his younger days when he had visited already before with his mother. At that time, he was not liking Buddhism.! What a U – turn and  transformation  from those days to the present in Guru’s life-time ! Life is like a journey ! What a happiness and joy in the present moment ! Who knows what happens tomorrow ? ! That was Guru’s heart-felt feeling when he recalls his visit along with his mother during climbing up the steps.

There is an old and time honoured saying that every mother is the First Guru of her child.!. Though, our Guru did not reveal so for who is his Guru, like wise, I presume Guru’s MOTHER is the one  the great Guru and Master of our present holy Guru, who first introduced him to the sacred path of Buddhist field by taking him to pagodas and this place as well ! taking along with her, though he has not got liking in those days, thus showing him  the “result as the path” !

But for this, we can’t imagine the future of our Guru in which way would have been transformed according to various worldly winds as a dependent Origen either good or bad !. So his mother has given firm Spiritual foundation  over which  Guru has built a mansion of Song Nguyen Tantra House which is a world great spiritual attraction.!

So  Guru’s mother role is outstanding and top !Guru intensely feels with a long sigh of grief hidden behind it saying : ” the stone steps are there, and my mother is gone ”

What a beautiful English writing ! A poet can only express and write English like wise!. In addition we feel a glimpse of ” Impermanence ” in every thing we see in life.!

When Guru utters the words ”  Buddha statue is there, Buddha is not there !”,

What a beautiful English writing ! At the same time what a profound philosophy embedded in it ! Buddha, personally did not like worshipping him like Hindu Gods. That is why we don’t  find in ” Theravada”. Later on it is ( Buddha Statues) introduced in ” Mahayana ” to remind the worshipers about the noble qualities of Renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata as well as the objects of Visual Meditation.!

    Sarve Janaha Sukhino Bhavanthu

May all be ” sarva bhootha hithe rathaha”

    Dear Guru

I am delighted to know you have a safe and meaningful tour in Da Nang City, the next stop-over during your long day trip to the North. Each of the words in the article is suffused with an air of nostalgia. Old stone steps, old pagodas, the time when your mother took you the first step to pagodas, the first time you saw the Buddha statue… Suddenly, I remember about what you often said with us that if your mother’s still alive, you can pay the debt of gratitude towards her by guiding her into the right orbit of Buddha Dharma, and this is the greatest repay to the parents as taught by the Buddha in the Anguttara Nikaya. Anyway, I believe that your current spiritual achievements will be the best gift for her. I can learn a lot from Guru in the way of fulfilling filial duty a Buddhist practitioner should do.

In the article, Guru also taught us about the meaning of Buddha statues. I can see many pagoda goers, though they share the same faith, same belief, but not everyone goes the right way because they have no good karmic affinity to meet an authentic spiritual teacher. That’s why no matter how diligently they have practiced or how long they’ve gone to pagodas and prayed in front of the statues of Buddha and Boddhisattvas, they’ve gained little result, or even nothing. I understand that although the Buddha statues represent for (1) the right path to enlightenment, (2) the wish to attain liberation, (3) the noble qualities of renunciation, Bodhicitta and sunyata, (4) the object of visualization, but without a right practice under the guidance of a Guru, how can the practitioner attain all of them? That’s why the Buddha statue is not the Buddha, but for a Tantrayana practitioner, I always keep in mind the teaching of Master Agvagosha: “There is no differene between the Buddha and Guru.” Only by following your teachings, practicing Guru devotion, shall we attain liberation and eternal happiness which the Buddha statue never can give us. Thank you very much for bestowing us this wonderful and beneficial Dharma lesson.

May Guru and your consort live long for the happiness of all sentient beings

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha nature

They are just used to remind four aspects that Guru has mentioned in this article. These are facts that many people who are praying in front of Buddha statue everyday, but they still have wrong view activities like worshipping god of wealth, still talking and acting just bases on their own subjective opinions, not Buddha’s teaching. I’m delighted to read this article, your words remind me of those days when I went to several pagodas with my mother on the first day of lunar months, I used to pray for myself and my family without knowing what Buddha is. I also wondered why these status had an amazing power to fulfill people’s wishes when I was a kid. When I grew older, I started to think it’s ridiculous to pray in front of a statue which had no feeling and no emotion, however, I also had no trust in any religion at that time. Until I had a chance to know you, the Holy Guru, I finally know what the meaning of the Buddha. No matter where we are, in a temple fulled of Buddha statue or in the middle of an empty street, we have the same chance to practice Buddhism because the only thing that matters is what’s in our mind. Thanks to the Guru, we have the right point of view to adjust ourselves to the orbit of Dharma. I’m so thankful for your meaningful article and I look forward to reading your next English article on your trip.

May you and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all beings.

May your trip to be safe from the beginning to the end.

    Dear Holy Guru!

I’m so grateful to read this new article “Buddha is not Buddha” in series Chronicle long distance 2020. From Guru’s teachings, I understand that Buddhas’ statues can’t help liberate us from all sufferings and the ignorance in Saha world, because they are just made by stone, cement and copper or even gold. They don’t show and teach us where is Right way to Liberation city, how to get Right view and what is Right method to practice Dharma to attain the Enlightenment. These priceless things are taught only by Guru, Master of Pure Mind Dharma.

I’m so moved knowing that Guru had been spending many hours after long distance in order to “on time” give us such valuable Dharma lessons in English. Thank you Guru so much for explaining in details about transcendent meanings of Buddha statues and right attitude towards them when practicing Buddha dharma – (1) The right path to Enlightenment; (2) The Wish to attain Liberation; (3) Renunciation, Bodhicitta and Sunyata (Emptiness); (4) The object of visualization meditation to Sunyata. I admire Guru’s Bodhicitta and wisdom in the path spreading the light and benefits of Pure Mind Dharma to all sentient beings. I’m proud of being your small disciple in this life.

    Dear Guru,

I’m delighted to read your fourth chronicle long distance.

We are now following you and visiting Da Nang, having sightseeing through beautiful pictures of Da Nang and the ancient Art stone’s village here. I am impressed by your concise English article with meaningful Dharma lesson of Buddha and Buddha statues. If the Buddha statue reminds us of the path to Enlightenment, the wish to attain Liberation, the renunciation-bodhicitta-sunyata, and the object of visualisation meditation to start going to Sunyata; then when remembering of Guru, we will remind of the above things as Guru represents the Buddha.

Your memories about childhood with your mother visiting pagodas bring me back to the previous days when I haven’t met you and learn about the Buddha teachings, about the enlightenment purpose of human life. Thanks to Guru guiding and your six marvellous spiritual inventions, we have faith in the Buddha by understanding the right view, not by faith from generations to generations with the wrong view, which was advised by the Buddha: “Believe in me without understanding me means libelling me”. More than that, we have the methods to practise Dharma, the Buddha’s teachings in our daily lives based on right view.

I am touched when realising that Guru experienced almost what we are undergoing. You are not a saint immediately after born, but a human like us. You also had a time that didn’t believe in Buddha, then by gradually contemplating Buddha’s teachings and diligently practising, Guru has become Guru today. I learn that it is a process of continuous persistence and efforts. Through Guru, we have a lively example of cultivation and transformation from a normal person to an extraordinary one. I feel we are so fortunate to follow your teachings and guidance to transform ourselves day by day.

Thank you Guru for your article. I pray for your smooth and successful Dharma trip.

May Guru and his consort good health and longevity for the benefits of all sentient beings.

May the Covid-19 pandemic soon come to an end.

But they cannot teach the right path according to the true Dharma, so it is necessary for us to have a true Guru, with many spiritual experiences, through research, effective application, to teach us, as well as to help sentient beings on the right orbit to reach the shore of liberation.

Dear holy Guru,I am excited to read your article: “Chronicle distance 4: BUDDHA IS NOT BUDDHA”.Why “Buddha is not Buddha”? Reading the headline makes me feel so strange and very curious about your teachings. Oh, it turns out, what that Guru taught was about the Buddha’s statues outside. Those statues of Buddha are made by raw elements (like copper, cement, plaster, etc.), are not the essence of the Buddha, are not the real Buddha. So, how can the statue help us out? No. Never. Thanks to Guru for your explanation to help us understand the hidden meaning in Buddha’s statue. That reminds us to the right path to Enlightenment (1), reminds our wish to attain Liberation (2), reminds us about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and Sunyata (wisdom of emptiness) (3), and that is an object of visualization meditation to start going to Sunyata (4). Your teaching helps us come to and return to the Buddha who is really inside our mind, our heart, our soul, not toward the statues outside, which is impermanent. After reading your article, I realize that I could not depend on Buddha’s statues because they can’t fulfil my wishes in Dharma life also in ordinary life. So, what should I refuge? I need to understand that it is not just praying or bowing my head to the Buddha’s statues, and then I will have worldly happiness and attain the Dharma. The most important thing is to rely on the Guru, the Kialamitra. It’s because Guru is the “living Buddha’s statues” who is the representative of Buddha, helping us to start true faith in the Three Jewels; helping us to have right view and right-thinking to follow the orbit Dharma, go on the path of Liberation. Guru is the most essential, the most important for a disciple like Guru Rinpoche, Guru Avagosa taught.Thank you very much, Guru, for writing the fourth English dharma article throughout your long journey to give us valuable dharma lessons. I pray for your Dharma trip to be safe and successful from the beginning to the end.I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your consort for the sake of sentient beings.May the pure fragrance of Thanh Tri Yoga from Guru pervade every direction.May the COVID-19 pandemic will come to an end soon.Om Mani Padme Hum.

These are facts that many people who are praying in front of Buddha statue everyday, but they still have wrong view activities like worshipping god of wealth, still talking and acting just bases on their own subjective opinions, not Buddha’s teaching. Despite of how long or how much you pray, they still can not hear us, can not help us. They are just used to remind four aspects that Guru has mentioned in this article. Dear holy Guru,

I am delighted to read your article: “Chronicle distance 4: BUDDHA IS NOT BUDDHA”.

Your article helps me to understand that the Buddha’s statues made of copper, cement or plaster so they can’t know, can’t understand, can’t hear, can’t fulfill our wishes. The Buddha’s statue is a reminder of the right path to Enlightenment, a reminder of the wish to attain Liberation and about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata (emptiness). It is also an object of visualization meditation to start going to Sunyata.

Thank you so much for your teaching us about the meaning of Buddha’s statues.

I really rejoice in the scenery in your beautiful pictures.

May you and your consort have good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May your Dharma trip always be safe, successful and without any trouble from beings and non-beings.

After passing many years of study, research and practice Buddhism, our Guru comment and teach us that “Buddha is not Buddha” in this Dharma Article. Thank you so much to Guru’s teaching at Thanh Tri Yoga, without Guru’ s teaching, I was a blind Dharma and wrong understanding about physical Buddha statues. Dear Guru,

I am happy to read the fourth unit in your long distance trip. I am grateful to Guru for this beneficial article with many beautiful photos and impressive images, once again leaving us more valuable lessons. I rejoice to praise Guru’s virtues
and merits, may your trip be always smooth and successful.

I am so moved before Guru’s memory about the old days, and I totally agree with vajra brother Mat Dieu Hang that Guru is wonderfully dutiful, the spiritual achievement at present of Guru is the best and effective way to help your mother. Through here, I have once more time to see Buddha through Guru, because Guru is representative of Three Jewels, because of the thoughts, the acts in body, speech and mind at Guru always following the right orbit of Buddha dharma.

And, through Guru’s explanation about why Buddha statue is not Buddha and it’s meaning of an expediency to attain ultimate purpose, I excitedly realize that there is very little Buddha statue at Song Nguyen Tantra House where has the most holy and peaceful space that I’ve known. I feel so proud and fortunate, I think that, instead of the need to see Buddha statues for having the reminders (of right path to enlightenment, of wish to attain liberation, of three noble qualities, as an object of visualization meditation start going to Sunyata), we already have the best of best reminder – that is holy Guru. With Guru’s wisdom and Bodhicitta, we, disciples and learners at Song Nguyen Tantra House, have priceless chances to be blessed by vividly great example in dedicatedly effort for liberation and benefiting sentient beings. We are not necessary to see many raw statues of Buddha, we just need to nurture the sincere devotion towards holy Guru, to diligently effort in rehearsing, practicing Thanh Tri Yoga under Guru’s guidance. I pray that all of us will always do that, to step by step going forward on the journey after Guru leading to city of liberation.

May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

    Dear Guru,

I bow my head to Guru’s lotus feet.

    Guru’s merit is immeasurable.

Thank you so much for allowing me to read this lesson.  It is an honor to be able to make this journey with you as if being at your side.  And it is likewise a pleasure to learn from you with your English!!!

Yes, it is important for one to grasp the difference between what is stone—and not of any value—and what is Holy.  Statues represent the Holy and are themselves nothing.  The reverence and symbolism they represent is only appreciated and felt with our experience in studying and practicing Dharma as evidenced by your recollection of being at your mom’s side and praying as a child.  The stone can appear powerful and resistant to change as you recalled the steps‘ continued existence compared to your mom’s absence.  But one of our greatest strengths is our ability to learn and change.

Wishing all sentient beings the ability to change and sculpt themselves into what they desire and what is in alignment to Dharma and beneficial to all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings be able to have the favorable chance to meet a Tantric Guru in this life, then follow him to reach the happiness of the Buddha Nature.

May all of us, our Guru’s, disciples always remember to contemplate and practice the three marvellous essences of the path to enlightenment (renunciation, bodhicitta, and emptiness) in the base of faithful Guru devotion.

May Guru and his consort enjoy long healthy lives for the benefit of all sentient beings!!!

May the Covid-19 pandemic come to end quickly.

    Tantra Lanidha (Ralph Keating)

  89. Mật Định Thuần says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

I am very happy to read your article. Before reading, I know that The Buddha statues or Buddha images are not only the physical representations or depiction of how Buddha was physically but are the symbol of Buddha’s teachings, fortune, inner peace and motivational factor for every human being. It is believed in the Buddhist world that chanting or praying in front of the Buddha statue gives one some sort of inner satisfaction which in turn gives peace to the mind, heart and soul. But I sometime aks myself why pagodas race to build bigger and bigger The Buddha statues. Even The Buddha statues made of pearl, maybe “Clothes make a man”? After reading, thank to your article I remember that: 1/ The Buddha’s statues reminds you to the right path to Enlightenment, no another way. 2/ The Buddha’s statues reminds you of your wish to attain Liberation. 3/ The Buddha’s statues reminds you about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata (emptiness) 4/ The Buddha’s statues is object of visualization meditation to start going to sunyata. All-important, we are not dependable upon external factors like statues but concentrate on mind transformation to the right Dharma orbit. We get enlightenment surely by diligent dharma practice and Guru’s devotion. I pray for your Dharma trip to be successful.

May the Holy Guru and his consort have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

    Dear Guru !

Thank you, Guru, forgiving us more gifts, with so many beautiful scenes that make me so excited. There by I understand even more: Buddha’s image is not Buddha. According to the raw element, the Buddha image was created by humans with cement and plaster,… While for the pure element, the real Buddha had to rely on his qualities, virtues and merits on the path to ultimate enlightenment.

Thank you Guru for the simple semantic infrastructure for us to understand as easily as:

1/ The Buddhas statue reminds you to the right path to Enlightenment, no another way.
2/ The Buddhas statue reminds you of your wish to attain liberation.
3/ The Buddhas statue reminds you about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata (emptiness).
4/ The Buddhas statue is object of visualizatoin meditation to start going to sunyata.

  95. Tantra Dharmapabodhisita  says:

    Dear H.H. Guru

The fourth article of the chronicle distance “Buddha is not Buddha” is marvellous teaching.  Dear Guru, I also asked these questions to many monks and professors of Buddhist studies. Sometimes I feel whatever I want to know or I just trying to find out the answers I found it in your articles. You told us the correct explanation regarding Buddha’s statue. You raised the question, “Buddha’s statues made of copper, cement or plaster, how can they help you? They can’t know, can’t understand, can’t hear you, how can they fulfil your wishes? No, never! Why there are many Buddha’s statues in temples?” You explain it very well, pointwise.

1/ The Buddha’s statue reminds us of the right path to Enlightenment, no another way

2/ The Buddha’s statue reminds us of our wish to attain Liberation

3/ The Buddha’s statue tells us about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and Sunyata (emptiness)

4/ The Buddha’s statue is the object of visualisation meditation to start going to Sunyata

Indeed, Buddha’s statue is not human, deva (God) who can’t help yes in everything. Buddha’s statue is not Buddha, and it is suitability to attain the ultimate purpose. And the conclusion “we won’t be confused copper with gold” is significant and we have to memorise this thing.

    With regards

Revered Gurujee

    Om Mani Padme Hum

I bow my head on your lotus feet

My trip to Biharsharif was very hectic. Since even after the Chancellor’s instruction, my salary did not be processed to my account I became a little bit concerned. I had to go my college though the teachers were advised not to come to the college during the lockdown period, and all the classes were suspended. However, we were asked to be in the college headquarter, for any academic or administrative needs. I came to Patna on 21st of the March, i.e. Saturday. On Monday 23rd March Lockdown was declared and I was entrapped at my daughter’s place, till it was unlocked by the Govt. on 31 May 2020. Being a disciplined employee I was present in the college on the opening of the institution. However, during the lockdown period I sent the teaching materials to the students regularly. On arrival at Biharsharif I visited my college and congratulated the newly appointed Prof. in-charge of the College, who is 14 years junior to me. Thereafter, I went to my Bank and enquired about my salary of the month of March 2020 and came to know that it has not arrived yet. I was not perturbed simply because after reading the article “New or Old, Don’t Worry” a firm faith is generated in me, hence I was optimist. But a mild ting of disappointment appeared as a wrinkle on my forehead. Anyway, I came back to the College office. Since students were not in the campus it was giving a vacant look. In fact College has not been opened for the students. Scared of the pandemic COVID 19 the Government is not in mood to start the classes. After another two hours of stay in the college I came back to my residence.

On second of this month our college was declared closed for summer vacation. I was sitting along with the teaching and non-teaching employees of the college. We were chatting together in a pleasant mood as after a long time we happen to meet together. The topic of discussion was mostly the experiences of the lockdown. It was a pleasant surprise for the entire teacher that suddenly a peon of the college came with a notice in his hand regarding the closure of the college for summer vacation. We all were happy except the non- teaching employees, as for them the office remained opened. I decided to come back to Patna, my daughter’s place. On third June I started back for Patna by the same cab and with the same driver by 7.30 A. M.

Unlike my home coming the roads were a little bit more frequented by the vehicles and pedestrians. The long restricted stays at home have created boredom among the people and the curiosity of the taste of roaming on the road has brought them out besides to meet their daily needs. However, people are scared of Corona virus that is why they are having full security measures. It was a mild weather, neither too hot nor too cold, so I decided to off the Air Conditioner of the cab. This road is normally very busy, because it links three states and about ten religious and historical places including Bodh-Gaya, Raajgrih, and Nalanda, the Buddhist Centres, Pawapuri, a Jain religious place and many Hindu religious places and temples. Due to the havoc of COVID 19 the foreigners are not at all seen, otherwise busses full of Buddhist Monks, Nuns and laities are normally seen on the roads. And their presence on the road makes the atmosphere lively, vibrant, religious and pious. By 10 A. M I came to my Daughter’s place. But it was a pleasant journey for two reasons.

    1. It was journey of solitude. I did not speak in whole of my back journey, except answering very brief to my driver’s quarry. This time I could not go to the tea shop too. The internal dialogue with my mind and me continued all the way. At some difficult places Guru and one of my friends helped me in solving my spiritual riddles. Being contented and in happy mood I arrived my destination.

    2. After arriving to my daughter’s house I received the message from the Bank regarding the credit of my salary in my Saving Bank’s Account. I thanked my holy Guru from the core of my heart. I was happy from within as the protective hand of Guru is still taking of my interest. From the core of my heart I expressed my gratitude to him for being with me all the times and thinking of my well-being. This is the reason that Guru is said to be indispensible in a disciple’s life.

After having my breakfast I started reading the Guru’s Journey description part 4 and became very delighted. It is really a very thought provoking article wherein on the one hand the Guru expresses his nostalgic experience and on the other rectifies his own paste beliefs after attaining the Buddhist wisdom.

While crossing the historic place, 1000 years old, Art stone’s village in the Đà Nẵng city our holy Guru becomes nostalgic and lost in the memories of his childhood that emerges in his matured mind The picture of the past became vivid and live, when he came here along with his mother in his childhood. Though the Buddhist statues had always been attractive for him but the feeling associated with them in both the periods are diametrically opposed to each other. Surprisingly both are rational in character. In our childhood we apply our wisdom, partially devolved from our surroundings and partially we carry it from our previous births. Jataka stories are the evidence to the fact that the Buddha accumulated his wisdom in several previous births. He became enlightened when he was born as Siddhartha. His accumulated knowledge earned in several previous births when got the force of the present meditational efforts, He became enlightened, The Buddha. This is the reason on the basis of his young ideas and imagination he could not accept the veracity of the Buddha as a saviour even after his mother took him to the pagodas. He says,” At the time I didn’t understand what is Buddhism, what is right view, what does follower according orbit Dharma. Here the monk taught us to bow to the Buddha’s statues. Then I and my mother often prayed and asked for everything but they didn’t with us. That’s because I didn’t believe in Buddha.” That time, for our young Guru, the parameter of the Buddha was his benevolence in meeting the needs of the devotees. Since his and his family’s mundane expectation could not be fulfilled even after his mother’s and his regularly visiting to pagodas and worshiping the Buddha, the rational young Guru’s mind did not accept Buddha a divine person. He was of the opinion that Buddha’s statues are made up of copper, cement or plaster, how can these help anyone? These are the glimpses of a rational approach of a young boy, egger to understand the world with a new modern vision. Being a disciplined one and obedient son, he imbibed his family culture and tradition that never allowed him to disobey his mother’s wishes of going to the Buddha and bow before him. Thus this bright aspect of his character is being reflected even in his childhood. The time passed, our holy Guru accumulated spiritual knowledge with the admonition of his teacher. His vision and the world view changed. He founded New Mind Buddhism and came with all the reply of those questions which a modern man, blinded with materialistic thought of the day raises, as well as with whom he was struggling in his youth. In the concluding part of his article he explains all the unspoken questions of his youth and the modern man is facing today. He has solved the riddle, whether here is the BUDDHA IS NOT BUDDHA. Knowing it well that plethora of of questions and quarry must be perplexing the human mind. He has come with the amicable solution suiting to the modern mind. They are:-

4/ The Buddha’s statue is object of visualization meditation to start going to Sunyatabe

    Om Mani Padme Hum

May all the sentient beings free of Corona and have the Buddha amrit

Long live our Guru along with his consort for the happiness of his disciples here and hereafter

    With Warm Regards

    Dear holy Guru
I am so delighted to read your article: “A long distance trip 4: Buddha is not Buddha”. Thank you so much for giving us a precious dharma gift from Art stone’s village in the Da Nang city.
Through this article, i learned that: The Buddha’s statues made of copper, cement or plaster are just the object of visualization meditaion to start going to Sunyata, a means to remind us about the right path to Enlightenment, our wish to attain Liberation and the noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta, sunyata (emptiness). Meanwhile, Guru directly transmits the teachings of the Buddha and guides us on the path to enlightenment, so we should not be confused copper with gold and waste our human life.
May your Dharma trip be safe and successful.
May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
May Covid-19 pandemic be soon over.

    Dearest Guru,

Thank you for the wonderful pictures and the lesson.  I’ve struggled with my explanation to Muslim friends about what Buddhism is and why there are statues.  You eloquently described for me the perfect definition and followed it with a great lesson.  Thank you for the expansion you bring to me, getting me closer and closer all the time. Thank you for the time and effort all this takes of you.

Dearest Holy guru are buddha statues not but a physical representation of the non manifested form of the buddha?…..When one venerates the buddha as a statue, Are we not looking at the statue as if it is a represtation of the manifested un-manifested physical being of the buddha himself because our minds are unable to grasp the concept of buddha… Dearest Holy Guru, it is a wonderful article i strongly feel im missing something here.

    Dear holy Guru,

I’m delighted reading this next chapter of your journey. I feel great compassion and peacefulness pouring out from your vivid words. I can’t imagine being so busy with everything from dawn to dusk yet Guru is still able to write and publish articles in English with a dense frequency. I admire your strength and compassion, realizing there are so much things that I can learn from Guru, not just Dharma, but also how to live a useful life at the fullest. I bow my head before your lotus feet.

I find great and deep meaning reading this article. Thank you for letting me know that Buddha statue is not Buddha or human or god who can help us attain enlightenment, but a expediency to remind us about attaining ultimate purpose. Do not mistake cooper for gold. Knowing this I feel lucky and graceful for following Guru’s guidance, who can truly help me, shape my stubborn mind into the right spiritual path. Thank you for this great lesson on distinguishing cooper and gold.

I pray for the long lives of Guru and his consort for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings be awake in the state of enlightenment.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

dear holy guru. My sincere thanks for your article “Buddha is not Buddha”. I ran back and forth between work and home like a rushed deer and could find little rest and then I sat down (no matter what to do), took a deep breath and started reading your article. This is a very interesting article because friends ask me why I have several Buddha figures in the house. For many people in the western world, a Buddha figure is often a nice decoration. The true meaning remains denied to some and yet the meaning is meaningful. Buddha promises the experience of lasting happiness, the liberation and enlightenment of body and mind, as well as the experience of higher states of consciousness and shows ways to fulfill our life. He is tolerant, frugal, undogmatic and stimulates to deal with himself and to work on his own emotions. Buddha stands for a balanced life in peace with oneself and the environment. We ourselves have to work on ourselves and shape our daily lives with compassion and attention. When we calm our minds we enter a new consciousness. With your wise knowledge you are helping holy Guru to take us on the path of enlightenment. In my life, Buddha reminds me of the true values and meaning of our existence. A Buddha figure can contribute to visualization, but a figure does not give us wisdom. Just like visiting a temple doesn’t give us any knowledge unless we study ourselves. It was only through the Dharma that I understood that nothing is permanent and that we can heal ourselves if we train our minds and treat our people and ourselves more carefully. . I am grateful for your wise articles and appreciate how hard you try to accompany us on our path. You take the time and dedication to teach Dharma all over the world so we can benefit from the fact that your wise articles are also available in English. I wish you holy Guru and the Sangha a successful meeting and many wonderful conversations and encounters. May all be happy and free from suffering. May Corona go away soon from this world. May our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings achieved the Happiness of Buddhas nature. OM MANI PADME HUM 🌺

    Dear guru,

when we go through your articles, we get reminded about the impermanence of this unpredictable life and the real core of Buddhism. We as a human doesn’t have the determination to grab good merits and try for gaining enlightenment. However, your great thought and findings in written form encourage us to get little knowledge abot the reality. We now got little understanding of the meaning of life and the reason why we have to consider the physical statue as a donar of merits for the recipients.

Your are always at the top to inspire us and encourage us to do more.

Thank you for your precious time being watsed in making us to understand.

I would like to thank my friend Violet for helping us to kow about the articles

    Dear holy Guru

I am delighted to read the article: “ A long distance trip 4: BUDDHA IS NOT BUDDHA”.

Before I knew chanhtuduy.com and holy Guru, I had the wrong view about the cultivation. I did not understand that I could only receive blessings from the Deity through Guru when I practiced the Dharma by my self. Buddha, he did not bless or disaster anyone, he showed the path of practice to liberation for the sentient beings and they had to walk on their own. Any worship and prayer before the Buddha’s statues is wrong view by Buddhists. Lucky for us to have Guru’s guiding to have the righ view in practicing dharma. As your writing is: “ Buddha’s statues made of copper, cement or plaster, how can they help you? They can know, can’t understand, can hear you, how can they fulfill your wishes?”.Through your artcle,  I understood that:

1, The Buddha’s statues                remind you to the right path to Enlightenment. No another way

2, The Buddha’s statues                remind you of your wish to attain the Liberation

3, The Buddha’s statues                remind you about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata ( emptiness)

4, The Buddha’s statues                is object of visualization meditation to start going to Sunyata.

    Dear holy Guru
I am so happy to read the article.
I was still remember when i was a child, my mother discovered a jar containing some small Buddha statues inside. My family built an altar to worship those Buddha statues. My family had trusted so much at those Buddha statues so we always prayed and asked for everything. A great disaster had came to my family and my father passed away by cancer. I wonder why I was always pray by all my mind but those Buddha statues did not help us. At that time, my faith in the Buddha Dharma in my mind fell. Untill I met chanhtuduy.com and holy Guru, I realized that at the past I got the wrong view and now I am so lucky to get the right view to change my mind. Through this article, I understood that Buddha statues is not human, deva ( God) who can’t help us in everything, by everything. Thank you, Guru to explained for us about the real meaning of Buddha statues so we won’t be confused copper with gold.
May Guru and his consort live long for the sake of humans beings.

    Dear holy Guru.
I am so happy to read this article.
The article made me understand that Buddha is not Buddha for those non-perseptual, emotionless statues. I still remember the oppotunity to meet Guru in Ha Long during his strip. He showed us a wooden statue and asked “what is it?”. And at that time we each had different ideas, one was an opinion of Buddha, one was an opinion a God of money, and one was a God of land…
Afterwards, the Guru slowly said “It’s just a wooden statue”. Form that I understand that:
1/ The Buddha’s statues remind you to the right path to enlightement. Not another way.
2/ The Buddha’s statues remind you of your wish to attain the liberation.
3/ The Buddha’s statues remind you about noble qualities are renunciation, bodhicitta and sunyata.
4/ The Buddha’s statues is object of visualization meditation to start going to sunyata.
    Thanks you, Guru.

I am learning about Buddhism, and I was confused because I kept seeing Buddhists bow and pray before statues, yet the Buddha is not a god. This article cleared up some of my confusion. The statue can’t help you, it’s just a statue. Thank you! Blessings and light to you! 🙏🏼
