Jin Yong: An Anti-Buddhist Mara (Kim Dung: Một dạng thiên ma phá hoại Phật pháp)

Jin Yong: An Anti-Buddhist Mara (Kim Dung: Một dạng thiên ma phá hoại Phật pháp)

Jin Yong: An Anti-Buddhist Mara

Anyone who is the fan of Chinese fictions or movies of wuxia genre (martial arts and chivalry) can’t help but admire Jin Young, father of a series of globally-known novels like “The Legend of Condor Heroes”, “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils”, “Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber”, “The Smiling, Proud Wanderer”, or “The Dear and the Cauldron”.  Looking back into the original history, however, Jin Yong is no other than an artfully crooked writer who could turn the black into white (or with Big lie technique), causing deviated images of Chinese historical figures in the eyes of the readers.

Quachtinh Quách Tĩnh

Guo Jing, a ruffian faked into a great hero in Song Dynasty

Who is Guo Jing in official history? A ruffian. Who is Huang Yaoshi in official history? A fake Taoist hermit who boasted himself of being able to turn the beans into soldiers. These two guys made idle promise with Commander Lu Ying and the Song force who were trying to hold the fort of Xiāngyáng that they would drive back the Mongols just within three months. Lu Ying, believed the words of Guo Jing and Huang Yaoshi, unexpectedly let the Mongols break through the siege and defeat his force. Petrified with amazement, knowing that he was deceited, Lu Ying stabbed Guo Jing and Huang Yaoshi to death with his sword before killing himself. The last words  he uttered: “The Song Dynasty fell in perdition for trusting dishonest courtiers. My forts were broken for trusting you!”.  Ironically, these two guys were turned into Chinese mighty protagonists in The Legend of Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. A Huang Yaoshi versed in four knowledges (music, chess, poetry and painting) and formidable combat style Falling Peach Flower Palm that brought him into one of the Five Greats of the Wulin (martial artists’ community) who was invited to sword discussion on Hua Shan Mountain. A Guo Jing faked into a great hero of Song Dynasty who insisted on killing his daughter Guo Fu to keep honor or broke out through the siege lines of the Mongols to rescue Yang Guo… Good heavens! So many other made-up impressive details which makes him far different from the mean, ignoble guy as described in official history.

A fake Taoist master is made up into a talented and elegant Huang Yaoshi

Through over 10 fictions, Jin Yong invented his characters in a very bizarre motif: scoundrels become heroes and vice versa! The despicable behavior of the six-pocket King of Beggars’ Sect, Chen Youliang, in Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre novel is a typical demonstration. Chen Youliang, conversely, was a real hero in official history. He mastered both literature and martial arts. Together with Zhu Yuanzhang, they resisted the Mongol conquest to liberate Han people.  Zhu Yuanzhang meanwhile was a mean, despicable person who had formed a plan to assassinate Chen Youliang for being jealous with his talent. Chanced on Zhu Yuanzhang’s plot, Chen Youliang backed out and set up a resistant force. He was then killed for falling in infiltration trap of Zhu Yuanzhang. Chen Youliang’s consort Du was captured and forced to become  concubine of Zhu Yuanzhang when she was in the third month of pregnancy. It should be stressed that  Zhu Yuanzhang could not own a strong and elite force without fervid supports from Chen Youliang in the very first start of the resistance war against Mongolia. In the middle stage of the war, Zhu Yuanzhang could not expel the Yuan force from the country’s boundary without the assistance of Li Bowen. While historians try to be fair-minded and judicious, Jin Yong had conversely changed the roles and characters of historical figures. For what purpose?

Lotus Flower Estrade in Song Nguyen Tantra House

From this point on, I want to give extra demonstrations on and differentiation between the rightness and wrongness in literature. The sick amusement of Jin Yong is by no means strange to those who attain the view of Buddhist cosmology . Accordingly, the Kama Loka (World of six Sense-Desires)  has been accommodating the Duratama Mara. The King and devas in this world often wield power over others’ creations as their amusement, that’s why called “Paranimmita-vasavatti deva”. Here we can see which world Jin Yong belonged to and what his old habit was. Most seriously is that these devas, headed by the King of Kama Loka, are said to use magical powers to sabotage the Buddhist practitioners who are going to attain enlightenment, just like the Buddha being obstructed by the Mara when he was sitting under the Bodhi tree on the verge of his final enlightenment. It is the Mara who disturbed the mind and external perception of Ananda that made him fail to ask the Buddha to live on for the rest of the kalpa. Before entering the Nirvana, the Buddha warned over his disciples that as the Degeneration age of Dharma came, the devas in this world would incarnate into the Buddhist practitioners’ body to destroy the Sangha (both Laymen and Bhikkhus) by faking the Buddha’s teachings. They are afraid to mention about the precepts whose pure lights cause them feel uncomfortable or more specifically, they broke so many rules that they do not dare to talk about them. If they ever teach Precepts, it tends to be in a rigid, unilateral way from the fact that they do not have a thorough perception of Compassion. This is why they fail to refer to the pure Precept which develops compassion to benefit all living beings but merely focus on the Precept to avoid evil doings by keeping the rules and observances as well as the Precept which includes all wholesome dharmas. The two following precepts pitifully are just the side part of the matter. They avoid teaching the first Precept which is suitable with those following the path of Bodhicitta who are willing to adapt themselves for the sake of sentient beings (in order to guide and lead the being to liberation)! Evidently, their behavior reveals an inherent clinging to mere rules and rituals or in other words, they are called “boasters”, “hypocrites”… . Even if they are not Buddhist practitioner (bhikkhus or layman), they seek to find ways to destroy or cause others to misunderstand and confuse of Buddhism (sutras and methods of practice), of which Jin Yong is a typical instance. He used his pen to jeer at the Buddhist Sangha system by making up Shaolin sect where monks scramble with one another for their own interest. Highly esteemed monks gradually show their true face as the debaucher like Shaolin’s abbot Xuanci who indulged in lewdness with First Evil Ye Erniang whose relationship ended with the suicide of Xuanci. This proves wide gaps in Buddhist knowledge of or purposeful distortion by Jin Yong who tries to cause confusion about the logicality and scientific aspect of precepts in Buddhism which normally have four flexible respects including Prevention, Open, Commandment, Violation and three precept categories including Obedience to the rules, Performance of good practices and Action for the benefit of sentient beings.

Official history told that the ruler of Kingdom Dali, Duan Zhixing, who surrendered to the Mongols was the one that guided the Yuan force to invade Vietnam in the first time. Under the pen of Jin Yong, Duan Zhixing was transformed into the First reverend Buddhist monk in China who abdicated after the family tragedy. This monk lured great admiration from unknowledgeable readers especially when he taught Qiu Qianren, an infamously atrocious fighter in martial arts community.

Worse is that Jin Yong builds up the image of Tibetan monks as bad persons who are obsessed with power, position and status. Typical is Jinlun Guoshi in the Legend of Condor Heroes who supported Hu Bilie to pacify Southern Song territory and suffered a tragic consequence. The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils portrays a Tibetan monk named Jiumozhi ( a little similarly pronounced as the name of Kumarajiva, an enlightened Buddhist practitioner from the Kingdom of Kucha) who sought for martial arts secret all his life which ironically goes against the Buddha’s teaching on taking wisdom as the cause of the Buddhist. Finally, the amorous Duan Yu, an illegitimate son of Dao Bai Feng and disgusted beggar Duan Yanqing, is the one who had awaken Jiumozhi?! This disdainful distortion of Buddhist images comes from nowhere but the bad creation habit of mara Jin Yong! Still more, Princess Zhao Min of the Yuan Dynasty in the Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber hired up to three talented but cruel Tibetan monks in service who all then suffered an awful death.

sư-thiếu-lâm, kiếm hiệp

Through the pen of Jin Yong, monks from Tibet, Tu Bo (old Tibet) and Tian Zhu (old India) turn to be lustful or wicked

Hence, through the pen of Jin Yong, monks from Tibet, Tu Bo (old Tibet) and Tian Zhu (old India) turn to be lustful or wicked while monks from kingdoms of Middle Yuan and Dali are all the saints. He implicitly disparages Buddhist Sangha with an action of putting Jinmao Shi Wang Xie Xun in dark prison; or let the Shaolin’s abbot fetter a virtuous and skillful in martial arts monk. Respectable monks described by Jin Yong as the archivists, warehouse keepers, cleaners in pagodas whilst the abbots or venerables are all attached to serious sin and indulgences. Unintentionally or purposefully did Jin Yong criticize the partial, erroneous treatment on virtuous monks by the Buddhist Sangha. And so, all wuxia fictions by Jin Yong may mislead the unknowledgeable readers as to the distorted images of monks and Buddhist internal system. The image of Taoism, oppositely, is dignifed through the portraits of Zhang San Feng, Qiu Chuji and Master of the Ming cult. From this point on, I come to doubt the implicit purpose of Jin Yong through his works.

In the past, the novel Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en was a hammer blow on Buddhism

This is not the first time the Chinese writers invent harmful stories on Buddhism. From the hammer blow on Buddhism like the Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en in the past, and now come the  outrageous popularity of enjoyable but impractical, fabricated fictions under Jin Yong’s “Paranimmita-vasavatti pen”. It’s unfortunate that quite a few of non-Buddhist  readers have praised Jin Yong as the Buddhist scholar while he is in fact an artful and effective saboteur towards Buddhism.

From now on, I, Thinley Nguyen Thanh, Director of the Center for Research, Application and Practice of Tibetan Yoga, the Spiritual Guru of Song Nguyen Tantra House, affirm that Jin Yong is the destroyer of Buddhism by his deceitful pen. Non-Buddhist readers should not lay their trust in what Jin Young wrote about Buddhism because his inexpertness shall result in a misunderstanding about Buddhism and Sangha. Jin Yong will inevitably suffer from the judgement of the fair causality principle.

  14. Tantra Upatissa says:

Dear Guru thanks thanks for sharing this article.

I feel it took a quiet long time to write this article carefully, thanks for your patience. The way you presented this article by showing up writings of Jim Yong is really interesting.

Hope people with good writing skills for novels use the art of writing for a good purpose and may not manipulate the real characters of individuals when compared to history like Jin Yong did in his novels.

May this world be protected from harmful writers. These novel writers may get a good heart and compassion towards others and write for good cause.

May Guru be protected and get enlightened.

May all beings be free from suffering and get enlightened.

    Guru is my guide

    Buddha is my life

    Dharma is my way

    Sangha is my Spirit

Respected Guruji, I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

At the outset,  I want to interrogate myself—Am I  like Jin yong in writing my comments in Chanhtuduy.com  ?

Some writers  or novelists in the world are known for their writing by their  perverted  intellect and crooked art of writing. !

They turn a small heap of stones into a big mountain Himalaya.  They turn a small waterfall into a big Nayagarafalls .!. Also they turn a mouse into a Tiger and vice versa.!.  One such Novelist  is the character of a novelist  Jin Yong ! narrated in this Article  who tries to cause confusion about the logistics and scientific aspects of percepts in Buddhism.!

More worse  is that Jin Yong builds up the image of Tibetan monks as bad persons who are obsessed with power , position and status.! This distortion of Buddhist’s images comes from nowhere but the bad creative habit of Mara of Jin Yong.!

Through the pen of Jin Yong,  monks from Tibet turn to be lustful or wicked while monks from kingdom of Middle yudean and Doli are all the saints. Unintentionally  or purposefully did Jin Yong criticize and it may lead the unknowledgeable readers as to the distorted images of monks.!

It is unfortunate that  quite  a few of non-Buddhist readers have praised Jin Yong as the Buddhist Scholar while he is in fact an artful and effective saboteur towards Buddhism.!

Hence, Guruji condemns such a person like Jin Yong and sends a message to the non-Buddhists not to read the books of such persons who are indulged in getting vicarious  pleasure in turning truth to non-truth and vice versa by their art of writing influenced by Mara.!

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

Long live our beloved Guruji for upholding Dharma.

    Dear Holy Guru,

I have read this valuable article.
Thank you so much for exposing the real face of Jin Yong, an anti-Buddhist Mara. With his deceitful pen, he has not only changed the history but also built harmful stories about Buddhism. His dangerous novels sow evil seeds of wrong view as well as plant doubt and fear thoughts in beings’s head which could stop them to become Buddhist. I can’t imagine how many spiritual lives has been destroyed because of his fraudulent stories. I want to express my gratitude to you, to your Bodhicitta and generosity, you have given us this meaningful article to awake us, to warn us not fall into the evil path. May myself and other Dharma’s brothers always nurture devotion toward Guru, listen to Guru, treasure Dharma and practice Dharma diligently.

  20. Mật Huệ Pháp
    Mật Huệ Pháp says:

    Dear Guru

I rejoice your discovery about the fabrication of historical figures in ancient China as well as Buddhist sangha by writer Jin Yong. I was shocked by these facts and evidences you posed in the article since for a long time, we were all obsessed that Tibet was the land of evil monks who found ways to harm others. Don’t know if Jin Yong has any prejudice again the land where accommodates world famous Buddhist masters and siddhas?

Paradoxically, as you found out, virtuous monks are described by Jin Yong as archivists, warehouse keepers or cleaners in pagoda while the abotts or venerables all break one or more Buddhist precepts. Meanwhile, Taoism is over-praised in his stories. This leads to a question whether Jin Yong has any “problems” with Buddhism? Likewise, heroes in China’s history are all “turned into” scoundrels and vice versa. It’s not by chance many Chinese literary critics have objected to the way Jin Yong distorted the image and characters of historical figures that lay bad impression and misunderstanding of the readers in China and the world as well.

Now through your teaching about the Duratama Mara in the Kama-loka (World of six desire senses), I come to know why Jin Yong is amused of turning virtuous figures into evil ones and vice versa, even in the area of Buddhism. Thank you for reminding us of the subtlest way a Mara can disturb us so that we should always be mindful in every action. May the causality principle will give the fairest judgement on such evil mind. My gratefulness to you for this eye-widening article.

May Guru and your consort live long for the sake of all sentient beings

May all sentient beings always stay in the state of awakening

May Corona pandemic soon be eradicated
