Letter to Disciples No. 98: MIND TRANSFORMATION IS THE MOST WONDERFUL THING!( Chuyển hóa tâm là điều kỳ diệu!)

Dear disciples!

Upon reading what Mat Linh – Mat Thang wrote in “Unbelievable events” together with your comments, I am so happy to see you experiencing the wonderful support of vajra guardian, known as Dakini in Tibetan Buddhism. I am sure that in Song Nguyen Tantra House, many of you have gone through this experience, given that anyone who cultivates in the right orbit of Dharma will get timely support from Dakini whenever he falls into a difficult or dangerous situation. However, as you know, Buddhism takes mind as the chief and wisdom as the goal of cultivation. We must affirm that mind transformation is the most wonderful result a practitioner can obtain. Then what is mind transformation? It doesn’t mean a quick and sudden change from an ordinary mind to the Buddha nature, but rather a journey from the realization of the importance of Buddha Dharma, then come to the discovery of a school or a Dharma that is suitable for practice, then come to unchangeable faith and diligence in the practice of the chosen Dharma, and finally come to enlightenment.

Once the practitioners realize the importance of Buddha Dharma, they will change their mind, or in other words, their mind is transformed in alignment with the orbit of Dharma. They tend to renounce what needs renouncing and no longer clings to his old view and behaviors. They gradually get rid of harmful hobbies like the abuse of intoxicants; do not believe in fortunetelling or spiritual medium; say nothing in relation with wrong view, except in counter-arguments; are not afraid of life hardships such as long-term unemployment, hunger or diseases. The faith in Dharma has grown up steadily in them.

Once the practitioners realize the importance of Buddha Dharma, they will change his mind, or in other words, his mind is transformed in alignment with the orbit of Dharma

Upon finding a suitable school or Dharma of practice, the fire of wisdom flares up in their mind: some see it brightly shine in this aspect while some see it in other aspects, but in general, all find a suitable practice to eliminate their suffering after a clear and thorough realization of the causes of samsaric suffering. Their mind is suffused with joy and indestructible faith in the blessings of the Three Jewels (for Mahayana followers). The Tantrayana practitioners, particularly, develops an additional special attitude  – unchangeable Guru devotion, which has been described specifically in “Fifty verses of Guru devotion” by Master Agvagosha. It is said the root Guru is the one who gives refuge and transmits precepts to us, while the master is the one who transmits Dharma. Each Buddhist practitioner has his own root Guru but may have many masters. For instance, Master Atisha had learnt from 150 spiritual teachers (masters) while Master Marpa got guidance from around 10 masters. Guru devotion means to entirely dedicate one’s body, speech and mind to the spiritual teacher with sincerity, modesty, wholeheartedness in learning the truth and knowing of cause and effect principle in the master-disciple relationship. The Cause is the spiritual teacher, the Effect is the disciple who practices wonderful Buddha Dharma. The Seed is Guru devotion, the Fruit is the foundation of Enlightenment. Hence, the development of the second phase (finding a suitable school or Dharma of practice) in Tantrayana revolves around Guru devotion and a solid faith in Dharma.

The Seed is Guru devotion, the Fruit is the foundation of Enlightenment

From here I give you a warning that some disciples, because of diligent cultivation in the beginning, obtain magical powers (created by powerful Tantric practice) such as gaining respect from other people, exorcising evil spirits, removing diseases or disasters, accumulating benefits and absorbing the subtle energy from the universe or higher realms. Such magical powers were ever proven in the cases of Mat Linh-Mat Thang-Mat Thuy-Mat Nga (removed their diseases), Mat Huan (exorcised evil spirit), Mat Kinh and Mat Pho (accumulating benefits) and Mat Tue Tin (absorbed the subtle energy from the universe). The problem is that some disciples may feel arrogant for what they’ve obtained, citing their diligence for that success and deny the role of or looking down on their Guru. Such disrespectful thought arises and exists without being “timely recognized and changed” may cause the practitioner lost of magical powers and fall in miserable conditions.

Such disrespectful thought arises and exists without being “timely recognized and changed” may cause the practitioner lost of magical powers and fall in miserable conditions.

Some disciples cried for Guru’s help when they got stuck in their life (unemployed, love-broken…), but when they regained success, they began to loose themselves in eight worldly concerns, forget the teachings of the Buddha and Guru, and belittle the causality law. Such a “waste of cultivation endeavor” as warned by Master Agvagosha. Ven. Hsuan Hua (Chinese) once told about a similar case who consequently died of cancer.

Once the practitioners put all their faith on the Dharma and practice with perseverance, they understand thoroughly about four noble truths in regard  human, things and phenomena (subjective or objective). They know what should be or should not be worried about, according to the Buddha’s teaching: “O’ Bihhkhus! Worry about matters unworthy of concern will cause you to suffer. Do not worry about matters worthy of concern will also cause you to suffer (suffer here refers to “afflictions”). They vow to wholeheartedly devote to Buddha Dharma by guiding the sentient beings on the path to enlightenment, which is called the practice of aspiration Bodhicitta and application Bodhicitta with prajnopaya (wisdom and means). Even if they reach the Buddha nature, they will never forget the debt of gratitude they owe to Guru, as the Padmasambhava taught in the “Dakini’s Teachings”.

O’ Bihhkhus! Worry about matters unworthy of concern will cause you to suffer. Do not worry about matters worthy of concern will also cause you to suffer (suffer here refers to “afflictions”).

A practitioner is seen to have enlightened mind when “there is no hindrance in his mind. When there is no hindrance, there is no fear. Surpasses far beyond a mere confused hallucination, he reaches the ultimate refuge – Nirvana” (Heart Sutra). He never thinks experiences resulting from techniques (or means) as supreme for knowing clearly about the true nature of things and phenomena (according to the teaching of Master Gampopa).

Dear disciples!

I have briefly described the process of mind transformation of a practitioner. Now you know that mind transformation is the goal of the practice, in which Guru devotion plays the vital role. What you have seen and experienced from five magical powers are evident to the Tantrayana practitioner, but they are only the “side benefit”, not the essence of the Dharma. Therefore, I have once given you alert in the article “Saying to an ignorant man”, which you should read to get a more unobstructed view of the harm of normal magical power. What pleased me most was that you all understood that those magical powers you’ve experienced originate from Guru (through the transmission channel of Guru). Anyway, this article should be another bell to kindly help you not to fall in the 14th grievous failure of a practitioner (see “Fourteen Grievous Failure of a Practitioner”).

Dear Guru, Thank you for your letter on “Mind Transformation”. It has improved my understanding a little more. I know that I still know nothing and I must keep reading. I am grateful that you put energy into guiding so many with your writing.

  3. Mật Khả Phúc says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

I have read this beneficial article.
I have understood the process of mind transformation of a practitioner is a long journey, from the realization of the importance of Buddha Dharma, to the discovery suitable Dharma, then to the stage of strong faith and diligence in practice and finally the Enlightenment. Mind transformation is the goal of practitioner. During that long journey, Guru devotion plays the vital role. Without Guru, practitioner could not understand Buddha teaching, could not find the right Dharma method to practice and could not get the right view. Guru devotion helps correct body, speech, mind in the right orbit of Dharma as well as stay away eight worldly concerns. Without Guru, we are just a sorrow beings who keep coming back in Samsara. I will remember “The Cause is the spiritual teacher, the Effect is the disciple who practice wonderful Dharma. The Seed is Guru devotion, the Fruit is the foundation of Enlightenment”. I happily praise your Bodhichitta, wisdom and generosity.
I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your consort for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Covid-19 pandemic will eliminate soon.

May all sentient beings attain the Buddha’s nature happiness.

    Om Mani Padme Hum

  4. Mật Chánh Tấn says:

    Dear holy Guru,

I am grateful to read this article. Thanks your explanation, I can understand that mind transformation is a journey with 4 stage: (1) realization of the importance of Buddha Dharma, (2) Discovery of a Dharma that is suitable for practice; (3) Unchangeable faith and diligence in practice of chosen Dharma; (4) finally come to enlightenment.

From stage 1, I understand that in order to realize the importance of Buddha Dharma, the practitioner should access and acquire the right view. The practitioner would no longer cling to old, the wrong view or bad behaviors. I know that by reading and commenting articles on Chanhtuduy.com, I would gradually get an understanding of the right view because all the articles were written based on the teaching of Buddha and enlightenment ones. Therefore, the more I read, comment and follow the lessons in the articles, the more I realize the importance of Buddha Dharma. About stage 2 and stage 3, the Guru has invented 6 precious methods in Yoga Thanh Tri, which are easy to practice, suitable for the busy life of a person and still helps practitioners get merit or have steady steps on the path of enlightenment. And in these stages, Guru devotion is a really important factor that would help the disciple going in the right track or right orbit of Dharma. Thank you Guru for giving us a warning that I should be careful of the ignorance and arrogance in these stages. Because these ignorance and arrogance (I, my, myself) poison would only make me fall into the trap of attachment, losing in the miserable conditions.

I realize that from stage 1, stage 2 and 3 going through to stage 4, there is always the touch of Guru. It looks like Guru devotion is a string that supports me on the journey of enlightenment (from stage 1 going through stage 4). The more I nurture Guru devotion, the stronger the support string is. And by leaning on that, I can reach the final destination: the city of liberation.

Thank you Guru for your teaching. May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  5. Mật Huệ Pháp
    Mật Huệ Pháp says:

    Dear Guru

I take delight in reading your letter titled “Mind transformation is the most wonderful thing”. Through your sermon, I understand that mind transformation is the unique goal of Buddhist practitioner since all good and bad karma we’ve created originate from our mind, as taught by the Buddha in the Dhammapada Sutra:

“Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief, they are all mind-made. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox.”

Therefore, it’s totally wrong if a practitioner, who gains magical power from diligent practice, becomes arrogant and denies the role of or belittles his Guru. With such attitude, he has fall in serious failure because Guru devotion is the foundation of enlightenment, not magical power. Furthermore, it proves that his mind is not transformed at all. If that disrespectful thought is not timely recognized and changed, he will soon fall in miserable conditions and most importantly, never be able to step into the gate of liberation.

I thank you for explaining to us about the process of mind transformation, which begins from the realization of the importance of Buddha Dharma, then come to the finding out suitable Dharma, then come to firm faith and diligence in practice, and Enlightenment will come as the final result. My gratefulness to you for this precious and beneficial sermon.

May Guru and your consort live long for the happiness of all sentient beings

May all sentient beings be suffused in the light of Buddha Dharma

May Covid-19 pandemic will end soon.

    Om Mani Padme Hum

    Dear admirable Guru,
    Honorable Guru,
I admit I am at times not in right way thinking at times still. I will continue to seek respite in the teachings of Guru, so I do not befall any notion of supremity. Truly wise things are taught to me through the medium of writing, and i am always thrilled when Violet Tran let’s me know of a new article. I have taken it upon myself to check from time to time as well. Though I try not to be too eager for if a tree grows tall and wide from watering and nutrients. But if I take too much of either out of balance I might wither under the weight unable to support itself, or grow too wide and not provide ample shade. What is said here is something I must cope with at times. Not that I think myself a taller tree. I just have never before found a tree willing to teach me so, how to be my own tree. I am thankful in respect to Guru. I will grow more and more as Guru instructs, and be mindful of wrong way path ever more so.

    Thank you compassionate Guru.
    Blessings to all.
