THANH TRI – THE 1ST MIND DHARMA: EIGHT DHARMA METHODS OF TAKING REFUGE IN THE THREE JEWELS (Eight paths leading to the true nature of mind): LESSON 6: TAKING REFUGE IN THE THREE JEWELS ON A DAILY BASIS, FROM THE INSIDE OUT. ( Bài 6: Đệ nhất tâm pháp Thanh Trí là Bát pháp Quy y ( 8 lối về Chân tâm): TÁC PHÁP QUY Y MỖI NGÀY, TỪ TRONG NHÀ RA NGOÀI PHỐ)

Depending on the difference of spiritual competence, one will be approved by his Guru to take refuge in the Three Jewels externally, internally, or through the sublime entrance. However, at any level or any type of taking refuge, every Buddhist practitioner has to perform taking refuge on a daily basis, which is considered as a declaration confirming their spiritual shelters from now until ultimate enlightenment.

Every Buddhist practitioner has to perform taking refuge on a daily basis, which is considered as a declaration confirmed their spiritual shelters from now until ultimate enlightenment.

This declaration embraces a variety of meanings, which are as follow:
1. The practitioner affirms his noble position as the Prince of the universe.
2. The practitioner affirms that he is an appropriate object that can be granted five precepts for individual to attain enlightenment (prohibition of killing humans, prohibition of taking what is not given, prohibition of sensuous misconduct, prohibition of falsehood spoken, prohibition of intoxication such as alcohol, drugs, cigarettes).
3. Ignorance karma that was accumulated from previous countless lives will come to an end due to the law of cause and effect.
4. The practitioner will be blessed in worldly affairs, depending on the extent of diligent practice. The outcome follows the law of cause and effect that “self-practice is proceeded diligently, the supporting blesses will come automatically”.
5. The practitioner won’t be harmed by human and non-human beings.
6. All legitimate wishes will be fulfilled as if the practitioner owns a precious gem that responds to all wishes at will.
7. The practitioner won’t be reborn into three lower realms. If they are reborn into the human being realm, they will be in a place where the Buddhist teachings can be found.
8. They will attain the Buddhahood in the future due to the law of cause and effect.

In the Collection of Long Discourses (Dīgha Nikāya), Silakkhandha Vagga Pali, Kutadanta sutta, it is affirmed that “an announcement of taking refuge” creates much more merits than making offerings to incalculable number of non-Buddhism practitioners, or offering money to build temples, places to practice Dharma for monastic monks and Buddhist practitioners. So how do we perform taking refuge? The practitioner should pick a suitable time of the day (morning, noon, afternoon, evening), then make an announcement of taking refuge as follow: “I am Cao Dieu…, I am taking refuge in Guru, in the Buddha, in the Dharma, in the Sangha from now until ultimate enlightenment”. Of course, the announcement is all good whether it is read/announced silently or loudly! The more times the practitioner performs taking refuge, the better it will be. The posture will not affect the benefit of practicing, whether the practitioner is standing, moving about, sitting, or lying at that time. The most important factors are faith and sincerity. Certainly, this practice is applicable only for those Buddhist practitioners who have already taken refuge through an official ceremony.
Besides, taking refuge in the Three Jewels can also be practiced in moving situations (travelling from one to another place). In “Dakini Teachings”, a collection teachings of Padmasambhava, the founder of Vajrayana Buddhism in Tibetan (page 55, Publisher Thien Phap Tri, translated into Vietnamese by Luc Thanh), the great master Guru Rinpoche taught that: “In whichever direction you travel, remember the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, make offerings, and take refuge (which is one of ten spiritual activities and taking refuge). For instance, if tomorrow you are going toward the east, make offerings today, taking refuge in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of that direction”.

In whichever direction you travel, remember the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, make offerings, and take refuge (which is one of ten spiritual activities and taking refuge)

After announcing that “I am taking refuge in Guru, in the Buddha, in the Dharma, and in the Sangha of ten directions”, we keep praying as follow: “Please prevent possible obstacles caused by humans and non-humans and make everything auspicious from the time leaving this place until I arrive at my destination”.
It is important to notice that:
1. If you cannot do it the day before departure, you should do it at the time of departure.
2. At the time of leaving, if you do not remember to take refuge within ten or seven steps of crossing your threshold, your refuge vow is damaged.
In case the Buddhist practitioners have already performed taking refuge the day before departure, or at the time of departure, but they still encounter obstacles caused by humans and non-humans; do not take it as a reason to disown the faith in taking refuge in the Three Jewels. Otherwise, the practitioners should acknowledge that it was a natural process of purifying karmic hindrances, in which heavy karma has been decreased to light karma, light karma will accordingly decrease to nothing.
Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava affirmed that if the Buddhist practitioners make great effort in Taking refuge practice, it is unnecessary to proceed other practices. They will certainly attain enlightenment because Taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the foundation of getting enlightenment.

Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava affirmed that if the Buddhist practitioners make great effort in Taking refuge practice, it is unnecessary to proceed other practices

Pure Mind lineage (or Thanh Tri lineage) focused on the real meaning of taking refuge, and on performing “announcement of taking refuge”. Thanks to six sublime spiritual Mind Dharma practices, while making an announcement of taking refuge whether in a fixed or moving state, we are also making offerings without interruption, which is one of ten spiritual activities.
However, Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava warned beforehand these following cases in which the practitioners may seem to practice diligently, however, there will be no fruitful outcomes:
1. Normal human beings who do not aim at attaining liberation.
2. People who use their honor and position as a means to hold pride, and show off their egos.
3. Rich people who are gripped by their stinginess.
4. Stupid people who are controlled by evil motives.
5. Lazy people who maintain their insensitivity.
6. The practitioners who choose to return to the household lives/or pay absolute attention to worldly affairs.
7. Buddhist teachers who are lost in the Eight Winds.
8. Meditators, who are indolent and pursuing worldly objectives.
The above mentioned cases are made because the practitioners are lacking of contemplating on impermanence, which results in one of fourteen grievous failures of a Buddhist practitioner that Master Gampopa has warned “Performing meritorious actions just to attain fame and praise is like bartering the mystic wish granting gem for a pellet of goat’s dung”.

    Dear holy Guru,
I am so grateful to read this wonderful article. I have learnt many valuable lessons from taking refuge in the Three Jewels in detail. Now I understand the right way to take refuge in Guru, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and the unlimited benefits of taking refuge.
Obviously, taking refuge in the Three Jewels does not depend on the place, time. Mind is the core factor to get successful in taking refuge in the Three Jewels. From your teaching, I eliminate the limitation of time, space when practicing this method. And I also know that Guru devotion is the wonderful bridge to the Pure Land. With the mind full of Guru devotion, every momment I take refuge in Guru, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, I will connect with the pure energy of the Pure Land and get blessings from Guru and Buddhas through Guru.
Moreover, when taking refuge in Guru, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, I always have a good chance to think of Guru, and make grateful to practice taking refuge. I live in a secular word but I can enjoy the blessings and the pure energy from the wonderful blissful land of Buddhas from Guru. How wonderful it is!
I am thankful to Guru for your spiritual innovation, which brings me the opportunity to walk on the path to enlightenment.
I am happy with the good deeds of Mat Tu who translated your article into English. Her translation helps many people have an access to your teaching for deep knowledge about taking refuge in Guru, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.
May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May Mat Tu get her righteous wishes on the path of liberation.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha nature.
May covid 19 pandemic come to an end soon.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  3. Cao Diệu Nhất Nguyên says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

Thank you for the lesson. Today I have learnt about taking refuge daily. Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava has affirmed that if we take refuge diligently, it is unnecessary to proceed other practices. And the Guru has introduced to me the 1st Mind Dharma to do just that.

To take refuge daily, I can make an announcement anytime of the day as follows: “I am Cao Dieu Nhat Nguyen, I am taking refuge in Guru, in the Buddha, in the Dharma, in the Sangha from now until ultimate enlightenment”.

I can also take refuge when I travel in whichever direction as follows: “I am taking refuge in Guru, in the Buddha, in the Dharma, and in the Sangha of ten directions. Please prevent possible obstacles caused by humans and non-humans and make everything auspicious from the time leaving this place until I arrive at my destination.” I must do so the day before departure or at the time of departure but no later than the first 7 steps.

Also, from the 8 scenarios where I will receive no good result for my diligent practice, I learnt that I should aim for liberation. I should not hold to my pride, or being stingy, lazy/insensitive. I should not have evil motives, pay too much attention to worldly affairs, moved by the Eight Winds, or chase worldly objectives. I am grateful for these valuable lessons from the Guru.

May the Guru have good health for the benefit of all sentient beings. May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature. May the Covid-19 pandemic will soon be over.

    Dear Guru,
I’m grateful for your lesson 6 on “Taking refuge in the Three Jewels on a daily basis, from the inside out.” I’ve learned about the noble, marvellous announcement of taking refuge once more time, that creates immeasurable merits affirmed by the Buddha. More than that, I’ve been impressed by the affirmation of Guru Rinpoche that if we make a great effort in taking refuge, it is unnecessary to proceed other practices but still certainly be able to attain enlightenment. His holy teaching helped me understand and more cherish the valuable first Mind Dharma that Guru invented: “Eight dharma methods of taking refuge in the Three Jewels”. I’m thankful for Guru’s wisdom and compassion that we now have a detailed, flexible and practical “taking refuge” method for performing daily, from inside to in moving situations with the notices to have the effective outcomes. I will bear in mind your teachings in my daily practising.

    Dear Guru,
I am delighted to read this article.
Thankful for explaining about the importance of taking refuge and how to do it on life. As the teaching of Guru Rinpoche Padmasabhava “In whichever direction you travel, remember the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, make offerings, and take refuge (which is one of ten spiritual activities and taking refuge). I am grateful Guru who is helped me the right way to do that through the 1st Mind Dharma as main points that:
The practitioner should pick a suitable time of the day (Morning, Noon, afternoon, evening), the make announcement of taking refuge as follow: I am Cao Dieu Tuyet Hoa, I am taking refuge in Guru, in the Buddha, in the Sangha from now until ultimate enlightenment”.
Taking refuge when moving situations this means traveling from one to another place. We can do it the day before departure or at the time of departure but reminder that cannot later than the first 10 steps.
When we practice Taking refuge, we need to do with focusing on the Enlightenment. If we have lacked it, this means we will fall into the case which is one of fourteen grievous failures of a Buddhist practitioner that Master Gampopa has warned: “Performing meritorious actions just to attain fame and praise is like bartering the mystic wish-granting gem of a pellet of goat’s dung”.
Through this article, I am thankful for Guru’s wisdom and Bodhicitta who is my motivation, shoving, and guiding me to go to the right on the path of Enlightenment.
May Guru have good health and longevity for the sake of all sentient beings.
May all the sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha-nature.
May the Covid 19 will end soon.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Reverend Guruiee
    Om Mani Padme Hum
I bow before your lotus feet
These days I am tormented with the apathetic attitude of my colleagues and non-teaching staffs of my college as they are not supportive in prepare my retirement claims and service book which needs to be sent to the university at least 6 months earlier to the date of retirement. No word of sympathy is coming from their mouth as the source of empathy has dried up from their heart, knowing it well that everyone has to retire sooner or later. This reminded me the 69th verse of of the Dhammapada wherein it is said, “When the evil deed does not ripened the fool thinks it as sweet as honey. But when the evil deed ripens, the fool comes to grief.” Then I realized that this trouble must be the fruition of the evil deeds committed in the past or previous life. And realized that the only way out is to surrender before our Holy Guru and take refuge un to him, who had been at my rescue in the past at the time of my great grief in the near past, when my salary was withheld by the Principal of my college for no reason and the authorities of the University supported his evil design.
Today another dilemma has come before me. If my papers are not prepared in time what will I do? How to be a free man after my retirement? While I was struggling with my problematic riddles I received an article shared by our holy Guru. This generated in me a sense of hope and optimism. In the situation of dismay this proved to the spark of positive signals that helped me in coming out of preliminary stage of depression born out of non-completion of my retirement benefit papers and others. And this is the basic idea of taking refuge. Technically speaking, the idea behind it is that when it starts to rain, we like to find a shelter. The Buddhist shelter from the rain of problems and pain of life is threefold: the Buddha, his teachings (the Dharma) and the spiritual community (the Sangha). “To take refuge in the Buddha is to take refuge in someone who has let go of holding back just as you can do. To take refuge in the dharma is to take refuge in all the teachings that encourage you and nurture your inherent ability to let go of holding back. And to take refuge in the Sangha is to take refuge in the community of people.” Since the Buddha is not on this planet earth in living form, our holy Guru has suggested us to take refuge in the Guru also. The reason is simple, Guru is the emblem of the Buddha or His real representative on this world, and hence we are expected to take refuge in him.
Our holy Guru is of the opinion that on must be very sincere about the refuge. It has to be strictly incorporated in our daily habit. While sitting moving or working this vow has to be remembered then and then its fruition starts as Buddhism believes in the Law of Karma or Law of Dependent Origination. It proper implementation is a must till the attainment of Enlightenment a, relieved from the chain of repeated birth and of suffering. However during the life journey there are enumerable mundane and transcendental benefits of observing the refuge. Since these have been narrated in the article itself in minute detail, I do not want to repeat them here.
Last but not the least on should not observe it only for temporary pragmatic benefits or to show the people of their religiosity. Guru Rinpoche Padmsambhava has mentioned the 8 types of persons who should not take refuge in the Trple Jem.
Finally, I would like to mention that If we decide to go for refuge in the three jewels, we should also commit ourselves to the path we choose by keeping vows.
The one mandatory vow, always implicit in taking refuge, does not want to harm other sentient beings. Please note that depending on tradition and teacher, some differences can appear in the exact definitions of the vows.
    Optional other vows are:
    1. Not killing: refers to humans and animals; it is both harming sentient beings.
    2. Not stealing: not taking what is not given; (this includes not paying taxes).
    3. No sexual misconduct: refers usually to committing adultery (having sex with others when married).
    4. Not lying: refers usually to not lying about spiritual attainments, but can include all lying.
    5. No intoxicants; refers traditionally to alcohol, but anything robbing clarity of mind (like drugs) is usually included.
    Om Mani Padme Hum
May all sentient beings attain the Buddha Nature
May the COVID 19 disappear from this planet earth
Long live our Guru for the benefit of the sentient beings
